Facts and figures

In the Netherlands, the term youth is applied to children and young people from birth up to the age of 25. In 2015, there were almost 5 million youths in this age group. As in most other industrialized countries, the proportion of youths is decreasing in comparison with the total population.

The Netherlands Youth Institute (Dutch: Nederlands Jeugdinstituut, NJi) is the Dutch national institute for compiling, verifying and disseminating knowledge on children and youth matters.

Our main aim is to improve the development of children and young people by increasing the quality and effectiveness of the services rendered to them and their parents.
